Great House, one of six Listed Buildings in this 13th century village, was re-roofed in June/July 2007 and consisted of two different slate arrangements, which required careful attention in order to satisfy the Listed Building Consent.

front elevation

The main front and rear elevations were finished with Penrhyn natural slates laid in random widths and diminishing courses. The rear annexe roofs were of 24” x 12 “ Penrhyn slates and 600 x 300 asbestos cement slates. The random diminishing slates were salvaged for re-use on the front elevation, to minimise the visual impact of the re-roofing and the rear roofs were finished with new Penrhyn slates in a 500 x 300 format. This required excellent house-keeping skills in order to accommodate and arrange a large quantity of various sized slates at roof level in order to ensure that the random diminishing slate effect was achieved, not to mention the roofing skills in actually laying the slates to a very high standard.

rear end elevation

The 300m2 roof was successfully completed with all associated new lead claddings, flashings and box gutters, with the addition of a multi-layer insulation blanket and with all necessary remedial timberwork. Upon completion, the client commented:

“We were very pleased with the quality of your work and your workforce. They were always polite
and hardworking despite the weather. Many thanks.”
